Acclaimed director Elia Schneider’s (Huelepega, Punto y Raya), latest film tells the remarkable real life story of Tamara Adrián, Venezuela’s first transgender politician. In a country with highly defined gender types, Tamara lived as Tomás Adrián, the son of a conservative family who became a successful lawyer and academic with a wife and family due despite harbouring strong feelings of identifying as female from a young age.
When Tomás finally decides to become Tamara, the personal becomes political as the Venezuelan state refuses to accept her new identity when she applies for an identity card as Tamara. This takes her into the world of political activism as she brings her legal experience to the struggle for GLBTIQ and women’s rights, culminating in her election to the Venezuelan Congress where she has put forward a number of proposed reforms including a marriage equality bill.
With a standout performance by Luis Fernández in the title role, this is a fascinating and timely account of a truly extraordinary person.
